I parked my car for 2 days, the car wont start. Hard to jump start. And things start to reset themselves, date/time, CD player etc.

I saw this thread:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=69139

However, they ran the diagnosis and said that power was being drawn from my cigarette lighter in the past week or so, although I'm 100% sure I dont have any thing plugged in there.

They want to charge me $360 for the battery replacement. But they will update the software after the battery is replaced as same as the above members car.

Is the software update worth it? I know other members can get like autozone batteries for like $150~. I guess the OEM battery even at the cheapest is around ~$200? Is it worth paying $160 to get the software update?

Thanks!!

There's a good thread in the DIY on how to change the battery for a lot less than $360. I'll leave it to others to comment on the software. GL.

If you complain to BMW NA they might make the dealer give you a new under the circumstances.

I got them to do it but it did take a week.

So not much use trying to argue with the dealer right?

I dont know how their diagnosis showed that battery was drained through the cigarette lighter though.

I just talked to my local mod shop and for them to get an OEM battery cost $300.. I guess paying $60 doesnt hurt too much.

Of course unless I wanna go with non OEM battery.. but I still have warranty left, so I may not want to take the risk at this point.

Thanks for the replies. More comments/thoughts plz!! Thx

honestly bro, the dealer is just trying to rape you on the battery prices. They tried to tell me they had to program and register the battery lol. And they were charging me $600 to do it.

They will try to scare you out of it too by saying that your idrive wont work and blah blah, but many people have bought batteries from autozone for our cars for $160 and have had ZERO problems.

I got mine for free otherwise I would have gone that route.

I guess I missed one more point I wanted to point out. I still have regular warranty left on the car.. .Will putting a autozone battery void some parts of that warranty? Thx

Oh and i know dealer is a stealer.

no it wont void the warranty. You can use legitimate oem replacement parts for your car and if they try to void your warranty based on that, a quick call to BMW NA will set them straight.

Subaru tried this many years ago when I worked for my father selling oem replacement parts and oem parts. We went to court so many times it was funny. We never lost a case in front of a judge.

Basically what they are trying to tell you is if you dont buy their parts, they wont honor their warranty, and that is illegal in the US.

Oh, you're still under warranty? Then I would take it in and ask for a replacement. That's what I did when mine quit on a 8-9 month old car last April. BS! Don't cave to the "unfavorable driving profile" bit either. Basically, on mine, they replaced it for free, but also said "you've been warned." Now I use a trickle charger when my car is sitting when I'm on long trips. Does it suck? Yes. But it beats the alternative. Use the Google search for about a thousand posts related to this problem.

You can try that but they dont cover batteries on the OEM warranty or CPO.
