Depends ... replacing the battery is actually pretty straight forward. BUT ... and it's a BIG BUT ... there are other things that are debated - after you remove the old and install the new ... Like "registering the battery"!

Search this topic you'll find tons of info. This is a much discussed topic.

Ugh... Replacing the battery is the _easy_ part. Debating with people here about the coding is the hard part! (But I'll put my $0.02 in an say that reading about the IBS sensor indicates that all the 'coding' is bullshit. Every 40ms the ecu checks the IBS. It compares the batteries SOC over a SIX hour period; more than enough time to determine whether to charge or not.)

Call a BMW service manager in a city 1000 miles away. Ask him/her. He/she (without any vested interest) will give you the real low-down. "There is no such thing as registering the battery." (Hint: ever notice that BMW body shops do not charge to register a battery??? They disconnect batteries all the time.)

Agree. However, they do not replace batteries all the time. I've disconnected my E60 and E90 batteries a few times for various maintenance work. If I were to replace a battery, I would definitely register it. No immediate problem if the new battery is not registered. The new battery just would not last as long as it could.
