i found it opens when im washing and spray the soap suds from the grill area away. it caught me by surprise at first. i put the hose down and stuck my finger through the grill to poke about a bit.

i did wonder why some seem to have the bars and some have the flaps. i figured it was to do with engine size but now i know!

hmmm... What Iceman said in before, was that the US market dosen't have any flaps, but the EU market do... Look at this picture (EU, France): http://forums.e60.net/index.php?act=module...cmd=si&img=3031

A E61 (MY05) without the flaps... Does the MY05 not have the flaps ??

it doesnt have anything to do with the cold weather package, i have them and dont have the package (nor i would want it, since today we are here at 42o C )

Makes me really wonder what's the reason that some has them and some don't

If it's for cooling down the oil of the engine... weird...

Practically I think the best function (visible) for the flaps has been for keeping the radiator clean from insects and other stuff The lower part could have also similar kind of protection.
