hey, im new to this forum and came across something i wanted to share. my car idles a little funny on super cold starts so i complained about it when i brought it in for service. i currently have 49.5k miles =(anyways. i have a 2005 545i 6mt. brought the car in for diagnoses and they found out i had a few bad lifters. as of right now my SA says they are taking apart the motor and have parts ordered. so if your experiencing bad cold starts you might want to have it looked at. the rough idle only happened once in awhile. other then that the car ran great. i was just going to blow it off and not say anything since it didnt seem like anything major but turns out it was.

Ya, there were some people reporting bad lifters on early 545s and had them replaced.

Did your engine make ticking sounds under load? Like in the morning when you drive off and accelerating up to speed around 1500 rpms to 3000 rpms did it have quick rythemetic ticking sounds coming from the engine?

Yes it should.

How loud was your ticking before you took it in? I'm starting to hear the ticking sound from my engine but its very slight... and my warranty is going to be out by the end of the year. I'm trying to see how much time I have left before it starts to act up.

the sound was barely noticable. the dealer had to keep the car overnight and start her up in the morning to get the "issue" to re occour

I have the ticking on each morning start , last about 15 minutes ( only hear when I drive off with light pedal ) goes away after that initial period ( until the next morning. Been to the dealer several times, Lever date codes OK, they changed the AC compresor for a SIB on the pulley. Also changed a pump of some sort. However, Same noise every morning.

I read alot about the VANOS and wonder if it is the very high oil pressure required ( maybe not high enough.) I thought about the valve lifters well. They had the upper half of the engine apart and said all measured and looked great. Cars stays there for 8 to 10 days at a time. I think I am just giving up on trying to have it fixed.

I also had a rough idle at all temperatures ( not real rough but noticable) I switched to 89 octane instead of 93. This has made a difference in overall engne idle.
