Turn the wheel all the way to the left, and then all the way to the right, click to click.

This should alleviate the malfunction. If it doesn't, you will need an OBD II scanner to diagnose the problem.

But the wheel trick should work.

It could also be a battery or alternator issue. Also could be the transfer case - in my case, it was actually the servo motor and the control module of the transfer case that prompted those codes along with a AWD Malfunction message on the iDrive - but this was due to some moisture getting into the area where front passenger's feet would be. If your carpets are dry and there's no moisture in the battery compartment or the compartment under the spare, its probably just a little "gremlin".

Let us know hot it goes. Good luck.

+1 on the battery and alternator - my dealer replaced both of these.
Also, check your tire pressure.

that means your battery is low. you can reset it by turning your steering wheel all the way to the left and then steering it back all the way to the right. That should reset the error warning.

I had the same problem. The dealer replaced a sensor under warranty. It isn't always a battery or alternator problem but it could be. I suggest taking it to the dealer. I took a photo of the error message and the instrument cluster to document exactly what I had seen.
Good luck.

If this is the case, that it only happens when the car starts, it is likely that the steering wheel click to click turning trick will work.

Ditto Chaz. I had the identical problem. Couldn't get it to go away on my 535xi. Dealer replaced the defective sensor on the steering column.
