I know it's not the best of threads but here is what crap gas can do to a BMW engine... at least that is what is "Said " to have caused the damage....

Yeah it's a E71 but holy crap that's some bad cylinder scoring on a 2 year old motor.

Here is the link to the Top Tier gas mumbo jumbo
http://www.toptiergas.com/index.html
and the retailer list...

The Carbon deposits on the previous posts X5 were pretty bad.

what a crock of crap, ive talked to crude oil engineers and refiners before and its very common knowledge according to them that the only difference between Top Tier and Cheap gas is the fact that the additives in the Top Tier are brand name and the Cheaper gas has generic
both have the same chemical properties and reactions for the most part, but you have no way of knowing how new any gas is from any retailer
im still very unconvinced about the carbon deposits being a sole result of using less expensive 92 octane
I could see it if it was 85 vs 92 etc

Shell and cold starts don't get along. My dads 3.0cs would never start in the morning if he used shell the day before. I'm a valero kinda guy myself. But last friday i put shell in my motorcycle and the next morning it would not start. That night it would not start. I was only using 89 so i ran the tank almost dry and filled her up with 91 at a different shell station. What happened the next morning you ask? Would not start again. So i drained the tank and filled it up with 91 valero and the next morning it fired right up and has every day since. I'm just glad my driveway is steep enough to gather up some speed to push start it. Maybe it only effects carburated and high compression motors.

I don't have to worry about fuel coz its cheap here coz were oil rich . I use the best "Ultra" fuel which is 98 octane used for high powered cars.

Car has been experiencing rough start ups especially when car is cold. The "check engine" light comes on but after driving a couple of miles the light disappears and the roughness/hesitency resolves.
Took it to BMW and they found nothing wrong. However, they did advise me to use mid-grade gas only since there are not a lot of people buying premium because of the economy. This premium gas just sits at the gas station for ages and rots.
BMW also advised me against using Shell.
Any thoughts?
