In the St Louis, MO area, most gas station carry premium grade at 91 octane. For my E60, I seek out Shell and BP stations that carry 93 octane. For my other vehicles that calls for regular grade, QuikTrip has been great. I have been driving for about 20 years.

a SA told my friend to stay clear from Shell because it has more ethanol in it. I think it's bs but that is what the SA said.

My car also have the rough idle during cold starts when I use Shell 91 (that's as high as I can get) . I tried 4 different Shell gas stations and the results were the same. As soon as I switched back to Esso 91 (which is the same as Exxon I think), the rough idle went away.

I was having a fuel consumption issue and mentioned it to my SA, after he suggested I get my fuel filters changed or the system flushed (which apparently isn't covered under any warranty) he suggested that I use Shell gas or BP that I have mostly been using. He also mentioned to stay away from Exxon.

So I guess by now everyone pretty much realized that Shell gas is ok to use after all?

OP, sorry to be the party pooper here, but have you considered that your HPFP might be the problem?

most SA's will give you differing answers about which gas to use, because as far as I know, they are just giving you their opinion. I had an uncle that was a BMW Master Tech at BMW of Palm Springs for 15 years and he never said a word about BMW choosing one gas company over another.
I think most will have varying experiences from station to station, because of the varying conditions of each station.
Now I follow the manual and strictly use top tier stations i.e. VP Fuels, 76, Shell, Chevron, or Mobil, and thus far, I really couldn't tell you the difference between any of them.
However, when I have options, I prefer VP and 76 over the others.

I will say this, DO NOT USE COSTCO GASOLINE!
It has ruined 2 fuel pumps in my cars.

Now you have gotten me all worried. Is this HPFP thing a big deal to fix?
