I am within the first 1000 miles of my car and i was told the mpg is poor in the running in period. However im only getting around 24 mpg average for around town driving. seems low to me. is this about right or does it get better in time ?

What kind of figures should i expect on average mpg with this model ?

tbh, you don't get amazing mpg on town driving, even a diesel can't compensate, so it sounds OK. You can eventually expect about 35mpg combined from a mixture of town and long runs on the motorway.

I wouldn't complain. During break-in I had 18 mpg and now it is 20+. The one additional observation I could add is that for the first 500 or so miles, the engine rpm during hard acceleration would not rise very quickly. I was always looking to see if I went too high in rpm during the break-in. As time went on, at some magic point ~ 600 m, I accelerated like usual but the tach went over 4500 in half the time it used to get to 4000 for the same pressure on the pedal. About that same time, the gas mileage improved.
Unlike some other people, I disagree that airconditioning has no effect on mileage. Just today I was cruising, watched the mpg meter and turned on and off the AC compressor. It tracked the load just as I expected it to. Over a week of driving with AC on, it must cut mpg reported on the OBC or Trip computer. On my previous car, in spring and fall, the mpg was 23+ but in summer and winter it was 21+. It didn't handle as well as the 5 and so I drove like an old man too.

Running in, I got between 22 and 26 round town, now with 2.5k on the clock , Its around 30 in town and nearer 40 on a motorway run (and that's giving it some welly)

Give it time, it will get to these figures soon.

Also, for our Uk Members, a simple very rough calculation is the 10p rule

Reset mileometer, brim tank and expect abot 10miles to the ?1.

at refill, 500 miles costs around ?50 to brim the tank again

Only rip-off britain and diesel engines come close to mmatching this rule!

It's a 545i isn't it ?

My avg for driving in the city only is 17.5 mpg, avg for highway driving is 29.
Avg when driving both is around 20.

If I would buy gas at 2$ a gallon I would drive a 760 too, but with 5 $ a gallon I stick with my 545, expensive enough...
