I read the press release but heard different info, on the 2008 528i the New 6 Speed Auto is available at No Cost right? I ordered my 2006 with manual tranny but this time I'm changing it to Auto, my wife can't drive manual.

the New 6 Speed Auto is available at No Cost right?
This is US only! In Europe it is not a 'no-cost option'.
Adding an automatic transmission costs around ?3000 here (might be less (or more) in other countries).
It is included in the 535d but they really just build ?3000 into to price.
The sports automatic is an additional option (in the region of ?150)

Although anything is possible, since the vast majority of buyers for the 528i will want an automatic, it should be added at no additional cost. Otherwise, they should just make the automatic standard, increase the base price to include it, and offer the manual as a no-cost option.
The marketing guys want to make the point that if you buy a 5 series they will give you a fancy and expensive auto transmission FREE. It makes it sound like you are getting a good deal and if they weren't giving you this special offer of 'no-cost option' then it might cost a lot of money. Of course nothing is FREE is business; they just build everything into the cost.
Of course, those people who choose manual in the US must make BMW very happy as it is cheaper to make... perhaps they also think that by making manual the default config some people who normally wouldn't consider manual would consider that(unlikely though).
They might also be making another point and that is the BMW is a drivers car and as such, manual is what is ships with unless you ask for something else. This might make the car more 'cool' in the US even if people choose auto anyway.
