My Ride: 2006 523i M-Sport
Hi guys
Has anyone experienced this problem I've been having recently.
Every time I switch the car on (Gearbox in P), I take the gear shifter down to D and then across to DS. I would say 1 in every 4 times I do this, the car goes straight into M2.
I 1st thought I was knocking the shifter hence knocking it into M2, but after looking into it and trying a few times, this definetaly isn't the case.
Anyone else experience this?
(The car is a pre-lci 523i Auto)

Car in BMW Body Shop, estimated completion 01/24/07.
I don't know the 2006 auto specifically, but I assume it is the same as the 2008. If I understand your description, it sounds like a fault needing attention. If left in D mode, it automatically starts in 2nd Gear, but with the Sport button pushed or in S mode it should start in 1st.

My Ride: Week 17 Build, 2008 E60 535d M Sport - Titanium Silver, Black Dakota Leather, Visibility Package, Media Package, Automatic gearbox, Steering Wheel Heating, M Double Spoke 172 19" Mixed Wheels, Auto-Dim+Exterior Mirror, Comfort seats, Front Seat Heating, Aluminium Pentan interior trim,DAB Tuner, TV Function, BMW Individual Audio System 825W !!
Mine is the same. I don't think it is a fault. I think it's because the car would normally start in second.
I have done this, when I have pulled up to a junction and come to a complete stop, gone from D to M, and it went straight into to M2, and I manually shifted it down to M1. It is not a gear you would normally want to, or need to use in normal driving, as I found it to be very short, and way too lively for the 535d.
Effectively the E60 has only got a 5 speed gearbox, as it never uses first. It seems as though first gear is just there for the times when you would want to light the tyres up!!

I see what you guys mean, but that shouldnt mean the car shifts into M2 automatically, should it?
Surely if the car is in DS, it shouldnt go into M2 unless I move the shifter up or down? At the moment it goes into M2 as soon as I push it to the side to engage DS.
I'm hoping a software update will fix it!

I gather your talking about when stationary ?? why not M2 ?? its not gonna leave you with no gear pre-selected ? that would be crazy ?
Or are you saying that at 60mph for example you move into DS and it drops straight into M2 ?? thats obviously wrong and dangerous.
FWIW I've never seen my car use M1 , even in DS, I can of course manually select M1 tho

I think what he is saying is that instead of going into "DS" when moved to the side it goes straight to "M2" like what happens when you move the shifter up or down after selecting "DS".
If that is the case I can't say mine has ever done that.

When I go into DS it should still be in full auto mode. However, it goes into M2 and M2 is actually displayed on the Dash as opposed to DS
