I'm no expert on Auto's, although I've had a few, but if you haven't already tried it, I would "reset" your gearbox's memory if you still have the problem.
This is the sort of thing that your Dealer should have done as a matter of course when you mentioned 'box problems.
There are a number of posts on here with descriptions of how to do it. Something like switch on the ignition and hold the throttle flat out for about 30 seconds. Not with the engine running of course - there was a thread here about someone who did just that with petrol car. Thank goodness for the rev limiter!!

At last, someone with the same problem! Let's hope between us we can get it sorted.
My car goes in tomorrow (was originally for brake fluid and microfilter but added "Gearbox problem" to their list) so I'll report back when they do.
When is your one in next?
Hi Smarty

I think there are a few silent suffering 5.30d owners, I chatted to a guy I met in a fuel queue (fuel queues/shortages are good for e60 socialising)...and guess what...... he is having the same with his 5.30d. I thought the guy was going to hug me, he had been convinced by his dealer that there was nothing wrong with his car and was so chuffed to hear that the 2 of us have the same problem.

Mine is back in next Thursday.

Our problems sound nearly identical, but I am not convinced it is gearbox related (but your dealer reseting the GB cant hurt to try). To me it feels more like an engine issue maybe fuel, air, exhaust not being managed properly or fighting against dirty/faulty components

Lets keep comparing notes.

Tell your dealer that I had my particle filter reset, ask them to try it with yours and see if you have any better results than I did...worth a try.

I'll try the gearbox reset at lunch time and see if it makes a difference.

The service guy who said about the coils was only on the service reception desk and I only spoke to him because he phoned to say the courtesy car I'd booked hadn't been returned. He probably didn't even look at what car I was bringing in.

I have had the same problem with my 2005 545iA sport. At 35 and 70 MPH, with light constant throttle, the car would hesitate, it felt like being pulled from behind for about a half second and repeat every second. A slight change in throttle would make the issue go away. It would also go away after driving for 10 miles. It felt like the transmission was thinking of downshifting and taking the car out of gear and then decided it didn't need to shift so it would put is back in gear. I also had a battery replaced about a month ago and the issue went away for a week. This reset the learning transmission and that temporarily solved the problem.

I had new performance summer tires (Bridgestone RE050 run flats) put on April 2008 and the issue appeared a month later. My dealer did a road force balance on the tires and the right rear tire was found to be defective. It has been replaced and no problems for a week. I will need a few more weeks without the issue to be 100% confident this was the problem.

Good luck getting your fixed, I know how annoying that feeling is.

I don't think mine and Zimguy's problems are gearbox related now. I think it's more a fuelling issue.
Our cars are both back in so I'll see what they do today. They were talking about replacing the Diesel Particulate Filter as they think the fault lies with that but I'm not so sure.
Someone else in the UK with an E39 530D had a similar problem and replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor cured it.

PS did the gearbox reset and it made no difference to the hesitation/juddering.

Hi Guys, At last someone with same problem, 2005 530d auto all of your probs + misfire at idle after restarting the car after few hours which has been going on for the past two years.
Number of software updates, few injectors changes, change of torque converter had not made much difference, at last service was told by my dealer that it is my driving style causing it,since complaining to BMW customer relations
awaiting another dealer to cure it but nothing been done after four weeks. fingers crossed as trying to drive legally on Dorset roads with occasional juddering drives me mad. Lets find out what can be done to 530d auto together ?
PS: I use a 2001 530d auto estate(e39) for work with over 130K without any problem.

Haven't got it back yet.
They've done lots of tests on the particulate filter (passed them all). Were then told by BMW technical to take the inlet manifold off to check the swirl flaps weren't sticking and to do a physical check on the particulate filter. They've said the particulate filter looks fine and the swirl flaps look fine but the air filter was clogged with wet leaves (?) and was black plus the inside of the inlet manifold was really dirty. Also, I think they are changing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve in the airbox as this was also gummed up.
Should be getting it back today so I'll see if that cures it.

Strange thing is, I can't find any info anywhere on when the air filter should be changed. Appears not to be on BMWs list of service items!
