Howdy,

Just took delivery of my 520d last week. Not exactly a screaming powerhouse, but no slouch either. Averaged 5.5L/100km on a highway run on the weekend. Not bad for a brand new engine.

A question for the Melbournites: has anyone had experience with German Auto Haus in Richmond? They're quite convenient for me and presumably a fair bit cheaper than the dealer, but I wouldn't trade that for quality.

Also more generally, what's the deal with the run in? The sales droid says it won't need an oil change and to just stick to the servicing schedule. The OBD shows an alarming 30,000km til the next oil change. Am I a bit old fashioned in taking it easy and doing a full change at about 2000km?

G'day and welcome to the forum! You know you're gonna have to post a couple of pics!

I don't know AH as I use the dealer.... call me paranoid but with all the software updates they require I generally stay where those who know reside....

Re the oil, it kind of depends a bit on your mileage. I have had my car for two years now and still haven't clicked over 15,000 km. I changed my oil some time ago as I too am from old school. Keep an eye on your oil level during run in as it does tend to consume a bit...

Cheers

Do you guys change the oil yourself? Ive been looking for something within the specified grade (0W30) and cant find it anywhere. the closest ive found was the castrol edge (0W40), would it be safe to fill the whole engine with it?

I've thought about changing the oil, oil filter, clear air filter etc. myself a number of times but just too much hassle...for me anyway. I don't have the proper tools and equipment to make it a no mess easy job and I wouldn't have the faintest idea on how to reset the service warning on the comptuer.

The safest bet is to buy the BMW rec supplied engine oil which I think is rebadged Castrol or Mobil or something else. You may pay a little more, but at least you save on labour if you do it yourself.

I got Remus Exhaust from Carshine, not the cheapest but good to deal with.

Hey I just got my Remus installed on my 530i on Monday, sounds really good, very happy with the sound, but seems to be a fair bit of vibration in the exhaust.
Did you get any vibration after installing it onto yours, be interested on any comments ?

Thanks

Don't screw with the oil type in the car, 0W40 is actually thicker than the recommended 0W30, best to get the correct oil, if anything goes wrong with the engine, because you used the wrong oil you are screwed ....

Shouldn't be any issues with taking it to Auto Haus, I am not sure if they can handle BMW warranty claims, so if you have a warranty claim, BMW need to inspect the problem / part, I am not sure how they will be with a non-dealer doing the work on it, that may be your only pitfall. That is why you may be forced to go to an authorised dealer ... where they will rip you off to no end ...

Unfortunately the droid is right ... The servicing interval is adaptive and the car will tell you when to change things, based on your driving habits, it will drop from 30,000 km, my first service from brand new on my 2006 325i was at approx 26,000 km. Don't worry, if anything breaks they will replace it, but it won't break, BMW's are bullet proof, very reliable. Wouldn't consider anything else, Except a C63 AMG (If I could afford one)

I wondered about the 520d, does it have enough power to carry such a large body of the 5 series around ?

Enjoy ....

my friend used to have hamann exhaust, there is only 1 exhaust on the left, and on the right is just pipe..
hope this help..

Hey I am not sure how much the Hamann exhaust costs, from what the guy at Carshine said it is significantly more expensive than a Remus. I think it is pointless to get the dual sided exhaust outlet, it probably wouldn't make that much difference in the note. Also you need to add the cost of the M rear bumper bottom trim (looks good though) Just got a Remus fitted to my 530i at Carshine in Tullamarine / Melbourne, it sounds really good, very happy with the sound not extremely loud, but a great note (have a vibration problem that needs to be sorted).
The cost of the Remus was $ 1400 installed.

i m thinking of take it in for a quote this Fri....either at the authorised bmw panel beater or dealer....but i think is gotta cost me heaps...

Lip addon looks great but, you need to be extra careful with car parks and parking near a kerb so you or anyone else driving the car doesn't tear it off ....

Hi fellow Australians! In a bit of a situation here.. I've got a flat and need to remove the rear wheel to get the tyres replaced possibly.

Now, problem is i can't find my lock key!!

I've rang a few dealers they tell me i need to bring the car in. Anyone else had this problem before and what did you do??

Recommend any local mechanics/ mobile mechanics who can help?

Cheers!!
