I love the sound of my current 3 litre petrol straight six

Those of you with 535ds, what do they sound like? Do you get a good note from the exhaust?

sounds meaty, I have read somewhere that BMW have done something to the exhaust system to make it sound like a V6, and I must say it does

I found that the sound standing outside of the car is great and sounds like a muted V8. Sitting inside it is horrible with a very strange noise created by the spooling of the first turbo which sounds very rough. I countered this by turning the hi-fi up and flooring the accelerator to get the second turbo on song

The 535d has a obvious diesel sound outside the car (especially when cold), but hey its a DIESEL.

Inside the car when driving it sounds like 6 cylinder, pretty heavy. You do not hear much of the diesel sound except on idle or when rolling to a light but when the light turns green and you hit the gas (the engine getting up from around 1200rpm) you definately hear that diesel rattle.

It doesn't bother me. I have done 5200km's now and loving it every km I drive it!

I bought this car because of several reasons:

The better resale value;
The impressive torque & very easy accesible power;
The low consumption of diesel, (9.1l/100) with spirited driving.

Nobody here in Holland wants a 545i after 2/3 years, because of the crazy gas prizes. A 5 series diesel on the other hand, will be quite popular.

Just got out with a microphone and taped this at the exhaust:

The other file is near the engine.
Good luck!

Thanks for the audio clips garehaan. Hope you can include a clip inside the car.
I still can not decide between a 530i and a 535d. I have never owned a diesel car before so I have more questions about the diesel engine in terms of maintenance and the diesel engine knocking noise.

I'd like to share a video clip on a 535D from a French TV program "Turbo". Yes, unfortunately the narration is in French but the clip is very nice and makes me want to place an order now.

Turbo
cheers

Thanks garehaan for the audio clips and Diego Pros for the link to the French video.

For a diesel I think it has a pretty good exhaust note and will be happy to live with that.

The video is great, makes these next 4 weeks until mine's due to arrive seem a very long time!!

here is one clip from BMW535D

and here is one of mine accelerating from 0-200.

Most people driving with you won't ever notice it's a diesel. It sounds more like a bif V8 infact.
The only time you hear rattling is when you have it at 1500 rpm and load it. Then in a blink (@2000) it disappears again.
