I'd be interested in hearing about this as well...given today's "anti-smoking" environment, especially in the US, you'd think BMW wouldn't include any ashtrays unless someone ordered "The smokers option". Almost 50% of the rear door panel storage space is taken up by the ashtray enclosures!
The car can be ordered with a non-smokers package for free.

I don't believe that the car can be ordered with a no smoking package in the US.
There is a replacement for the ashtray available, at least for the pre-LCI E60. It's probably the same thing that comes with the no smoking kit elsewhere in the world. It is ruberized inside and prevents coins from "clinking" around. I had it in my 04 545 but found it pretty much useless becasue the inside was small and shaped poorly. Becasue of that, I didn't bother looking for one for my 08.
