Thumbs up

I've searched a bit on this topic here, but was curious as to why BMW changed the engines on the 545i after 2 years (move from the 4.4L to the 4.8L). Seems like a big investment in R&D etc to only have an engine in service for 2 years -- then moving to the 4.8L (550i) one in '06 - current.

Any thoughts?

The 4.4 engine was longer in use than two years.
It's been used on the 7series before it made it to the 5 series.

+1 - It was launched in 2001 for the 745. The current 550 shares the same engine as the 750. And these engines (or varients) are also used in the 645/650 and X5 vehicles as well.

True as both Iceman and advancedlogic point out but there was also some pressure from competition (a good thing) that may have spurred on the 4.8l intro as well... But in no way was it some sort of condemnation of the 4.4l engine! I had a 545 before my 550 and both our excellent engines.

Right. Mercedes was coming out with the 382HP E550. Can you imagine the beating a 545i would still be taking on the freeway against one of those?? Heck, even the 550i can't really run with it on the straights.

"Mercedes. The new-age muscle car!"

If only roads were straight, but they are not and that is why we drive what we drive. Eh?

Yep, to be posers! If we really wanted sporty performance, we'd have bought actual sports cars!

Hi Pennetta, don't you think BMW, like all MFGs, of any product, have to offer something bigger/better to get people to "move up"?

I know that whatever becomes of the 08 E60 will be improved and I probably would want to upgrade. That's how it is done.

Bad news? They are too late for me ... unless something catastrophic (lottery) this will be the last last vehicle I purchase.
