I've searched a bit on this topic here, but was curious as to why BMW changed the engines on the 545i after 2 years (move from the 4.4L to the 4.8L). Seems like a big investment in R&D etc to only have an engine in service for 2 years -- then moving to the 4.8L (550i) one in '06 - current.
Any thoughts?

The 4.4 engine was longer in use than two years.
It's been used on the 7series before it made it to the 5 series.

Model Year: 2011
True as both Iceman and advancedlogic point out but there was also some pressure from competition (a good thing) that may have spurred on the 4.8l intro as well... But in no way was it some sort of condemnation of the 4.4l engine! I had a 545 before my 550 and both our excellent engines.

If only roads were straight, but they are not and that is why we drive what we drive. Eh?

I know that whatever becomes of the 08 E60 will be improved and I probably would want to upgrade. That's how it is done.
Bad news? They are too late for me ... unless something catastrophic (lottery) this will be the last last vehicle I purchase.

Hi Pennetta, don't you think BMW, like all MFGs, of any product, have to offer something bigger/better to get people to "move up"?
