This has happened twice now (7000 miles):

Driving along and the OBC lights in the centre of the dash will gradually get dimmer over 4-5 seconds, then snap back into life.

Also, I had i-drive spontaneouly reboot itself in the middle of a drive about a week ago. So far I have not had the experience of i-drive dying for long periods as a couple of members have described.

This happens approx every third month on my present e46 (1999).
It has been doing it since new.
Has something to do with automatic adjustment to ambience light conditions doing a hiccup me thinks.
I have stopped worrying about it a long time ago.
Maybe it?s similar to your issue.
