I need another key for my 2006 550i. I really don't want to spend $200 or $300 or whatever it is. Has anyone bought a used key fob off of Ebay and successfully reprogrammed it?

Every so often, it seems, someone comes along who cannot fathom how BMW's key system works (it's not, as you know, that complicated: you can order a replacement key at any dealer). So this question does pop up from time to time due to ignorance.

The BMW Assist question, that was more (to me) a question of "my car was stolen and I was too cheap to pay for BMW Assist but gosh gee it would really come in handy now..."

Yes, thank you very much. I'm very aware that I can order a new key from the dealer. No ignorance here, but thanks anyway.

Do you have the key or the old metal type key?

Just so you don't get a misimpression, I meant a lack of knowledge about how the "system" works, namely that a key that is not specifically for your car won't work (I did not mean BMW's distribution network for keys).
