on the way back from Atlanta from picking up my 535i averaging 75mph I was able to get 33mpg for around 200 miles...
I consistently get 20mpg in town in traffic, and my wife says I have a lead right foot.

I really have just now got the car broken in and really have not driven alot of highway. So I kinda expect for the numbers to go up a bit.

OK - I know I am going to get some hate mail for this one - but is there anyone out there with software upgrades that will improve gas mileage as opposed to performance based upgrades? I mean - gas is continuing to rise... $4 a gallon - who knows where it will end.

I am putting between 150 and 400 miles a day on my 535xi and while I am getting 26-30 mpg on the highway - I'd like to get more.

If there is no one currently with the upgrades - I think theres a market for it (or will be a market) - maybe someone who works for a company that has the capability to develop such software might be listening??????
Someone posted to lighten your car like removing the spare ....etc., way back....

I also have an xi and tank to tank mileage varies from very low 20ish mpg to mid 20s mpg ... I have seen that easy cruising on a long drive (40-50 miles +) at US-legal speed limits yields very high 20s or even touches 30 mpg. But a couple of traffic jams or heavy go-pedal action and BAM!

No doubt a RWD 530/535 is going to do even better simply because of drivetrain drain in an xi/AWD vehicle.

And while I'm trying to personally conserve a few drops of gasoline, I'm constantly passed by guzzlers blowing by at 20 over the limit ... Every time I experience that, I hear a major "cha-ching" in my XOM holdings Thank you ... thank you ... may I have another!

The best I got with my old 550 was 28 mpg hwy doing between 55 and 65 mph on a level surface and being gentle on the throttle. When I wasn't trying to be conservative, I got 25 mpg at best. (Doing the same thing in my M5 gets me 19 mpg when 'trying' to be gentle with the throttle).

I have an 04 545i and easily get close to 30mpg highway. My friend has a 325 and never gets that, which, I believe is due to higher rpms for similar speeds. I have an 08 535ix as a loaner currently and it also cannot obtain the mpg the V8 gets.

I have a Dinan cold-air intake & throttle body, and a Remus cat-back exhaust. When you're not driving aggressively I believe these items can lead to higher mpg as well due to better air flow and less weight.

Yeah but that's no fun!! Seriously, there is a <big> difference in mpg results depending on your level of "enthusiasm". Just for kicks I compared a week of driving the same routes and traffic conditions more or less, driving around in D, to a week driving in S but same style of driving. About 1.5 mpg's lower. I then drove a week in S and had fun while doing it, and another 2 mpg reduction.

A guy told me one time if you're going for mileage, pretend there's a raw egg between the sole of your foot and the go-pedal.... That style will max economy, but again... It's no fun and not why most of us bought bimmers!

I have a 65-70 mile commute to work each way and if I take a detour (which I usually have to because of traffic tie ups) it adds 10 miles each way - so I usually put on 150 a day. Then if I travel... its even more. Its a grind... and I knew it when I took the job.... which is why I bought the 535xi - I knew I would look forward to every opportunity to drive it!!!!! I had a Z4 but given the miles I was going to be putting on it I wanted something with a bit more margin of error in case of an accident!!!!

I have a new saying when people ask what I do. I tell them I'm a race car driver. I race twice a day for 1 1/2 hours in a combination enduro and demolition derby around Boston. In between I sit in an office.

That is basically my drive, about 150 miles per day back and forth. Just like you said I knew it was going to be a grind and decided to get the best driving machine I can afford to enjoy yhe ride.
