My Ride: '04 545i (10/03) Sport, 6, bk/bk, Premium Sound, Cold Weather, Active Headlights, Tinted Windows, Clear Bra! Winter wheels 'plastic dipped'

So, as we all know, our Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST's are not reall good in the snow (ha!). So, living in Colorado, I'm in the market for some Winter Tires. I'd love to hear what you all are using and how you like what you are using (or have used in the past).

I'm also considering a dedicated second set of wheels for my winter tires...would it be wise (and cost effective) to downsize wheels? To 17's, 16's...smaller? Any suggestions?

I'm trying to add a couple of pictures to this...we'll see.

Happy motoring and thanks for your insightful advice!

Frank

I have Dunlop Wintersport M3 with 17" ASA JH3 rims on my car. Recently, I've been regretting getting the 17s - should have opted for the 18" rims instead (looks better).

TireRack recommends downsizing for winter tires -- better in the snow due to smaller width of the tire compared to 18s.

Thank you for your advice/insight...So, TireRack recommends - but you all are the experts. What do you recommend?

Looks are important, but so is winter safety. Tricky balance, eh?

I would err on the side of safety. But, that's just me. Check my signature for my winter set-up. Been very happy with it.

For winter it is Michlein pilot Sport 2-the new one, I had on my prev car fwd.

Now I opted a Hankook Icebear W300 V and it kick$ a$$ so good I never imagined on ice snow wet road no probs. Also good in dry. In dry I tested at 230km/h no probs in -10C.

In 17"s I think they are perfect but seen 19"s in winter too, althought the thinner it is the best the traction.

So it is a new brand only here in EU, in Belgium u cannot buy it for some reasons I order from Germany.

Just because sg we do ot know or it is from Korea it is not = worth nothing.

It is perfect and very economic.
but if you want brands, this year it was Dunlop M3 who won, or Michlein are always best ones!

hope to help you, can you order on-line?

ASA is BBS so no probs w quality nor safety!

I also went with the Dunlop sp4 and asa jh3 from tirerack. They are a great combo. The 18's were not in stock and are harder to get your hands on. I'm looking forward to getting the 18 RFT back on when spring breaks. The nice thing about the winter set up is that when the pot holes start appearing, I will not care a bit.

Good Luck!

I went with the Dunlop M3's on 17" wheels and for me, it's the perfect setup for winter safety -- sure there is a looks tradeoff by going down to 17" is there but I don't let it bother me...

Thanks guys...really good feedback and should get me started in the right direction.

I think I'll peruse the classifieds for some 17" wheels and go from there.

Thanks again...

Frank
