My 528i has 8400 milles. I had a 2004 530i prior to this one and never noticed this sound.

I started noticing a noise, like a whine, when I first got the car and has continued. It happens when I am coasting, between the speeds of 55 and 40 mph only. Never hear it otherwise. Even a slight touch to the accelerator will stop it.

I thought it might be a break in issue or tires (continental) but it never went away.

I brought it in for State inspection and asked them to check it out. Had a tech drive it and he noticed the whine as well.
I left it and the SA called to tell me they where replacing the differential with a new one.
I picked it up today and it has the same whine. The SA says they drove other 2008 5 series that had the same noise and decided that was inherent to the car.
I'm going back next week to drive in another 528 to see if that is the real thing.

Any suggestions?? The sound is not loud but annoying.

I have Richmond gears in the rear on my Camaro, so I know what you mean about the annoying "whine".

The problem isn't your differential, its the ring and pinion thats connected to it. Unless you have an aftermarket setup, there should be absloutely NO whine whatsoever....it needs to go back to the shop.

When setting up a ring an pinion it has to be aligned properly - otherwise you get the same symptoms you posted.

It could be possible that BMW switched part suppliers and the new parts are causing the whine. It could also be possible that BMW is not using the correct gear oil. In any event - it is definitely something that can, and should be fixed.

Thanks for your reply. I am going to BMW Tuesday to discuss.

I had hoped some 528i owner/members would reply if they had the same issue.

Is there anywhere I can get more detailed info?
