So I'm cruisin down the street in my 6-4.....er, i mean e60 (rip easy-e). I decided to top out as the tollway was empty around 3 am, my escort 9500i was quiet, and the temps were a cool 60. The needle sweeps from 90 to 120 in a couple seconds (loving my SSTT), and right as I'm passing 130 mph, I start to hear this weird noise coming from the front passenger side. It sounds like a cross between electronic static (like something you'd hear when touching a black and red speaker wire together) and thin sheetmetal being scraped/hit. I immediately let off the gas and thinking it was some background music on the radio, pushed the mute button and mashed on the pedal once more. And right as I'm passing 130-135 mph, the weird electronic-sheetmetal scraping noise happened again.

Any thoughts/ideas? I'd hate to have to go the dealer and try to explain this one ("Yea, I was taking my car over 130 mph when I heard this happen...")

I don't know -- quick 'off-the-cuff' would lead me to believe that you experienced EMI/RFI, which may have been realized through the wires in the engine bay (e.g., from distributor to plugs).

Did the noise increase as you 'put down the pedal'? Did it seem to oscillate with the revs of the engine?

turn the music all the way up and you wont here it .. :D

it might be something wrong with wire on stereo/

I had something similar, which was whenever i pushed accerlator pedal, my car was whinning.. end up it was wire problem...

You have the sport package, so your speed limiter is set at 150 or 155, I can't remember. The non-sport speed limiter is set right around 130. I am not sure how they change it, but they may disconnect the 130 wire and connect the 150 wire in the ECU. If you are getting the interference right as you are passing the limit, it might be the old speed limiter wire sending a signal, but grounded to another source. Just a guess. Good luck explaining that one to the service department. I would check it out for you in my car, but the ticket would hurt too badly.

hmm, didn't even consider the speed limiter as a possibility. i'll bring it up during my next scheduled service. thx.
