So, I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that the "ding" at startup will never be something I can get rid of.

But, I also have the same sound when I exit the car if I open the driver's door without waiting a few seconds after removing the fob. I get tons of stares (for all the wrong reasons). Can this be removed?

Thanks!

I don't think you can shut it off or turn it down.

Maybe it's me but I've never felt that it was annoying or that other people were staring at me because of the dinging...

People stare? Come on! Everyone's cars make some kind of noise or chime when getting in or out. It never really bothered me, and I certainly don't look around to see if people are staring. Life could be worse.

its not that much of an annoyance in my opinion. just the sound that you know you just got in or out of an e60

I think I figured out how to get rid of it...get comfort access on your next car!

Keep the fob in your pocket and you'll never hear a key-related ding again!...

I heard that theres a way to get it removed... by having a handicap mode. supposedly every car made after a certain year has it.. my friend works at toyota and he owns an avalon and he had it removed by a tech.

i am not sure about bmw's but he told me that it can only be removed by techs and it is possible by putting the car in handicap mode as if u are impared. i dont know on the validity of this but my friend at work knows a guy whos a bmw tech and he will get me in contact with him to see if this is even possible. i will post back on this because it does anoy me sometimes and i just blast my radio and it fades away...

There is NO DOUBT about it. It could be worse. As others have said here, its a small (? trivial) price to pay to drive this car. Just wondering if there was an easy fix. I'm not about to ditch my car for an Audi if its not something I can change.

Thanks for the replies.

Is this a US thing? What purpose does it serve?

Exactly.

I've never had this "alram" on my car so I can only assume that it's some kind of US Lawyer Alarm..
