Just did it yesterday after I was having the electrical bugs in my 2005 545i, was easier than I thought it was. Just had to remove some things but it was easy, changing it in my 2000 Camaro SS is way easier than the Bimmer. But just be careful on older or high mileage cars cause the stupid coolant vent pipe will break. I just moved it and it dicided to crack on me. So off to the dealer for a new one $40. But other than that, easy work. Cars runs like its new from the dealer.

Also did my alternator last month on my 2004 545i (85K miles) and agree it was pretty easy. Most challenging part is lining up the heavy alternator properly to put the mounting bolts back in. Patience is required.
Decided to do my water pump, thermostat and belts as long as I was in there. Thermostat is now throwing an error (bad heater) and I will replace the thermostat next week.
I also owned a Camaro (1976 purchased new), and yes it was a dream to work on. You could practically climb into the engine bay with the engine to work on it. Everything was hanging right in front of you.
My vent pipe also broke. I looked at the construction and decided that the long plastic tube (that turns brittle with heat and age) with brass inserts on each end was lame. I pulled the plastic tube out of the larger rubber end hoses and replaced it with a piece of 5/16" copper tubing and a couple of hose clamps ($5 total). 100K miles from now the copper tubing will still be going strong.
