Currently on Potenza 050 rft and they are very impressive too, ride is quite harsh because of them being a RFT. The only criticism of the F1s is their tendency to tramline on broken surfaces.

Can anyone comment on the tramlining on the RE050A's?

This link is quite useful, although it's not for RFTs - TyreComparison

directional tyres like the F1s tend to tramline, re050 is ok

Now I'm confused!?!? I don't like tramlining!

RE050A's then?

I'm also trying to understand what tyres to buy next summer!

So far of what I read, my new tyres could be Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, or Continental SportContact2.
But definetly not Run Flat's.

And I'm talking about 245/40 18"'s here.

But the fact remains that the E60 is sensible to tramlining.

Don't forget weight. The Bridgestones weigh the most.

245/40 18"

RE050A RFT - 31 lbs.
RE040 RFT - 31lbs.
Dunlop OEM DSST - 29 lbs.
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-2 EMT - 28 lbs.
Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S-C EMT- 29 lbs.
Goodyear Eagle NCT 5 EMT 29 lbs.
Yokohama AVS Sport RFT - 31 lbs.

Blizzak MZ-03 RFT - 36 lbs. (didn't know about these- $198)

Non-runflats can be lighter, but not always. The lightest seem to be the ContiSportContact 2 - 23 lbs. The PS2s are pretty good at 24 lbs.

Donv started a thread where he talks about unsprung weight savings and how it translates into real horsepower.

Unfortunately, unless you have driven them back to back it's hard to make a definitive call. On collecting my own car in July, it came with RE050 RF's. I traded in an E60 with Goodyear RF's. I thought the RE050's were unbelievely noisy. Ride seemed to be comparable to the Goodyears. That means relatively bad.

I swapped them within 3 days for Pirelli non run flats. Best decision I made. It's the way the car should ride from the factory.

Just out of curiosity, how long have u had the car, whats your annual mileage and have you had any punctures yet?

I've had an E60 from June 04 to July 05 with 8000Kms on Goodyear RF's and no punctures.

I've had my second E60 since July, 1800Kms so far, real Pirelli non-rf's and no punctures yet.

I think it might be worth starting a poll to see how many people changed to non-rf's and how many have had punctures since thay did.

how do you know when you have a puncture?? Unitil its too late, especially if you do not have tire pressure monitor?

The TPM on the E60 works with non-run flats. You probably wouldn't notice a puncture with a run-flat.

However, you most DEFINITELY will know u have a puncture (unless it's a slow leak and in which case the TPM will alert) with a standard non RF tyre.
