Here in Belgium, when you buy a car, it doesn't come with fuel ;-)

Hence, one has to drive to the nearest pump to fill up. In my case, I added 68 liters.

But I understand that someone has filled up even more...

Air in the tires?

How did that custom come about?

You're absolutely right on this one. In addition to not getting the cooling from the fuel, the fuel pump will be ingesting some air as well, and this isn't good for its mechanics either.
+1. Usually, the bottom of the tank is full of sediments, I think it is not advisable to always wait for the light to come up b4 you refuel. Its not good for the fuel pump.

Air is cheap ---> so yes, there is air in the tires.

I don't know how it came about. I'm Dutch and I've been living here for only a year and a half now. In the Netherlands one would get at least half a tankful upon delivery.

Of course it's no problem, but it's a bit odd when you get into your new car: the first thing you see on the dash is a warning sign.

Question

BMW recommends to REFILL the tank and do not recommend to drive with less than 35 miles left to drive.
Refer brocure Gasoline section

Tow / Push / Pull

Ok, when I say it doesn't come with fuel, I exaggerated a bit. But only a bit. When I took delivery, I was clearly instructed to fill up at the pump in front of the dealer and not try to make it to the next one
There are examples of people that did not make it to the nearest gas station (although of course a normal dealer will make sure that that doesn't happen). In my case, I only had to drive 200 meters and put in exactly 68 liters:

Thumbs up

May be the gas pumps owned by the dealer directly or indirectly
some deal may be involved in Belgium between Dealers and Gas Pumps ?

I can't say exactly what's left in the tank after the zero reading but clearly there's something. Keep in mind that the countdown reading might jump from a single digit number like 5 or 6 straight to zero without showing 4, 3, 2, or 1 since it's calculated based on MPG which can fluctuate.

One thing to keep in mind -- running the car with little to no fuel in the tank can cause the fuel pump to run hot since I think the pump is submerged in the tank and is cooled naturally by the fuel that surrounds it. If you often run on empty, you might be shortening the life of the fuel pump...
Thanks Rudy. I knew not to run the tank all the way down to empty but I did not know why not to.

No, they are unrelated. And this is something that's common in all of Belgium.
