My Ride: E60 530d SE. Silver, grey leather, auto.
Default

Hi all

My wife currently has a black 18 month old 525D SE. We have been thinking about upgrading the wheels from the 17" ones to some aftermarket 19"'s for a while. Anyway, the car went in to the the dealer for some work last week and, to cut a long story short, the car has been part exchanged for a brand new 530D SE in Silver!

The car arrives next week - but it comes with 17" alloys again. I don't want to spend a fortune on getting BMW 19"'s, and also because we are getting the SE rather than Sport model, it's not offered as an option anyway. And this is my concern.

I want to buy some third party M5 replica alloys - I can get a set here in the UK for around ?850 including tyres, balancing and fitting. My questions are;

1) Is there any reason why I should avoid 19" wheels on an SE spec car? I don't mind a slightly harsher ride and understand that the hardness from jumping from 17" to 19" will mostly be offest by the fact that they won't be runflats. But - why doesn't BMW offer 19" as an option on the SE cars, and only those with M-Sport packs? Can the SE suspension handle large wheels?

2) Is 19" the best size to get on the E60, or would 18" or 20" look better?

All opinions welcome - I am looking to order the new wheels and tyres early next week so they arrive at the same time as the car

Forget about 20", go for a balanced ride with 18" or for a sportier (harsher) ride with 19". Keep in mind that 17" with runflats is about the same harsh like 19" non runflats

I would go with in-spec 19's and lower profile tires for looks. I would go with in-spec 18's and higher profile tires for ride. And, welcome.

Did you ask your dealer if he could work out a trade for your new wheels and tires? It might bring the OEM 18" costs down to near par with the 3rd party's.

FYI, I don't know how your weather is, but aftermarket wheels, unless they are from a major manufacturer (and expensive) have inferior finishes. My 98 540i 3rd parties, made in Austria, and used for snow wheels were looking grim afrter season 2 and completely peeled of their clearcoat by the end of season 3. Be careful of quality of what you are buying.

Cheers,
Ray Hull

If you look for the rect post with "172" you will see that a group buy is trying to get set up for 172 staggered wheels and tyres. Hopefully the cost will be sub ?1500 but the wheels are oem and the tyres will be conti sc2 or maybe 3.

Your price looks similar to one i saw on ebay and when i enquired if they could quote with the correct size tyres and a premium brand the price went up to ?1300 and you have to use a spigot ring as the wheels were machined for the e39 models. For ?200 extra i think the oem route is the better bet.

If your price is from "RT" then where on the same level.

You can have staggered 18" as an optional fit on the se so i dont see any reason why they wont fit. If anything you have more clearance due to the taller ride height compared to the sport.

Thanks guys - I will have a think about which route to go, it's a choice between 18" OEM or 19" replicas which will probably come in around the same price. Blingo, I'll be in touch if my wife decided on the 18s
