I have a 2008 535xi with the staggered wheel sport package. I have purchased an additional set of 138's for the winter months. My question is this - Am I better off getting dedicated snows on the 138's or a nice set of all-seasons. My thought is to go with the all seasons, since the car is AWD. Since the snows are softer, if they stay on above 50 degrees they wear out real fast. Thoughts? Thanks.

I'd say it depends on your driving needs. If you absolutely need to be road-ready no matter what the winter weather throws at you in Chicago [say you're an ER Doc who must report], dedicated snows would be the way to go. If, on the other hand, you have the flexibility to decide when to drive, a good all-season tire on an xi will, with careful conservative driving, get you around. You will, give up a little on performance with all-seasons but the best are actually pretty good handlers. As is also the case with the hi-perf snows.

Hey - it's probably 100 degrees out there now - but it never hurts to plan

Not sure we can post FS in this forum or not. If offended, I apology and will remember not do it again.

If you need an extra set of OEM RIMs for xi for your winter, I have one set available with new TPMS sensor installed. ( no tire, just RIM). I got it and planning to have a snow tire for winter ski trip to Tahoe. I now change my mind and will just drive my SUV for ski.

PM me if you are interested.

Simon.

For winter, go with dedicated snows. More traction. I don't like all seasons because they offer neither the summer performance of summer performance tires or the winter performance of dedicated snows. All seasons do not have nearly the snow traction of dedicated snows.

Chicago? Snows.

As sdg1871 says, all season tires are crappy tires in all seasons. I have all-seasons on our 330xi and they are crap in the snow - braking is especially dangerous as they might as well be summer tires. Bad choice on my part.

Your 535xi with snows will be amazing all winter in Chicago ... worry-free at all times. It's a no-brainer here.

I don't consider my Michelin PS A/S tires to be "crappy." It's a compromise. I don't need a dedicated winter set for the 5-6 days when there is snow on the road each year. If I were in Chicago, I might make a different decision based on experience.

With a high-performance A/S you lose a little performance compared to summer tires, but not so much that the average driver will notice a huge difference unless he's trying to pull .90 in every corner. I would be willing to bet that some of the higher end A/S will still outperform some of the cheaper summer tires on a hot day. I know they will in the rain.

Very simple: If you have a second set of wheels and tires, get the snows. If you are planning to only drive on the one set of rims and tire all year round, get all seasons and hang out in the slow lane j/k there are plenty of decent A/S tires - read reviews on tirerack and do some research. But if you will be using this as your dedicated winter set, might as well get winter tires

Logically stated, especially for the OP's Chicago area.

Thanks for all of the advice. I have a tire/wheel set for summer, and also a set of wheels for the winter. I will probably get the snows put on those then.
