Well, this is my second winter with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. In the years I've lived here, the past two have been the most snow-filled I've seen. We got between 6-7" last night and it drifted into my driveway up to 9-10" in places. The garage is behind my house, on a slight incline, so I had to back out 1/4 turn, then go forward and upward a 1/4 turn to head to the street. Yes, it slipped a bit, but with a little feathering of the throttle, I was able to make it to the street without much difficulty.

I know a great many believe that A/S tires aren't good in any season. It depends on where you live. If it snowed here more frequently (this is the first this season--we usually get 3-4 decent snows), I would invest in dedicated snow tires and do an annual swap. So far, these tires have met my needs year round--even in 10 inches of snow. Just some info for those who might be in the same boat.

I finally had a few good nights to try out my Dunlop 3D's and I can say that my RWD 550i is better in the snow than my 530xi was with all-seasons. It's amazing how sturdy these cars are in the snow with the proper rubber.

+1.
My wife's X5 with all-season tires does not handle as well as my 550i with Dunlop Wintersport 3D. From a dead stop, the X5 takes off better but once the 550i gets moving it turns and stops better.

Great to hear that you're fine with your tires CWS530,

Over here I would not manage with only AS tires.

My winter Nokian RSi are crap on anything but ice 'n' snow, but on that they are great.
They are too soft and activate the DSC way too easy on dry surface.

They cannot be used in summer neither, because they would simply melt under.

I do miss my real summer set - in April they go under the car.

Did your 530xi have little tread left on the tires vs full tread on your Dunlops. In my experience of having a 05 G35 RWD with Dunlop winter sports vs my new 535 X drive with all seasons, the 535 AWD outperformed G in the snow.

Thanks Ric, I'm happy with them. If I lived where you do or in a place where a lot of snow is constant (e.g., where I lived in Colorado), I'd get a dedicated set for snow without hesitation. It was 57F last week and It's supposed to be back up to 48F by the weekend (crazy, inconsistent weather here). I just thought some of the guys in the middle might like to know as they make their decisions. To me, it's not worth it for 5-7 days per year of needed use, especially when I can manage (not excel mind you) with A/S even in 10" of snow. Cheers.

Good to know. There is no doubt that winter tyres are better in areas with more frequent snow for a host of reasons - construction, tyre composition, tread, etc. At any rate - they are called all season but traction begins with the tyre!!! So while this works great for a few days - and as I live in MI - I can assure you such a setup would = disaster on day in and day out drives in this weather. But more power to you and good to know that its handling well for you..

My tires were full thread on the xi, because I hadn't used them at all until winter, due to having 19's on all summer. My 550i with the 3D's, as I've stated prior, is just so much more sure-footed than my xi was in the snow with those OEM Conti's.

In the chunky, frozen slush these tires are incredible too. I feel so confident driving with them that I doubt I'd ever have reason to buy an AWD car again....at least in this city.
