With advanced A/C:

Going into i-Drive and manually specifying the air distribution switches off the 'auto' light, but leaves air volume (the fan speed) under automatic control. If you then rotate the fan control it also switches to manual control, as indicated by the orange light on the fan control lighting up to show which speed you have selected.

Pressing the 'auto' button again reverts the system to fully automatic air distribution and volume. On my car that also means that it forgets your manual settings, so there's no way back without going into i-Drive and manually setting your preference again.

It's the one thing about i-Drive I dislike. I really would prefer the manual air distribution buttons (screen, vents, footwell) that the 1 and 3 Series get. It's ridiculous to expect someone to mess about in the overly complex climate control screens whilst trying to drive.

To what? What it already is?

Your preferred manual climate settings don't CHANGE in iDrive AFAIK (unless the user changes them) and AFAIK if the Auto light is OFF, then the system reverts to your iDrive climate preferences.

Not in my case. I can not get my settings back no matter what!

Can you be more specific - what do you press or do to get your personal Idrive preferences back as they were before switching to auto?

I'm without the advanced AC.
All I can change from the iDrive is the centre vent
but in the spring time that's all the adjusting I need.

But I'm very happy with the system, now that's working after
the regulator is changed and the system re-programmed.

When I press the 'auto' button in my car, the bars in the iDrive climate control screen revert to showing you what the automatic programme has decided is the optimum distribution. i.e. the manual distribution pattern that I have selected is lost.
