How reliable are these ?drive-by-wire? in BMWs as in ?fly-by-wire? in Airbus ? I have not studied the redundant system in automobiles such as BMW, but for sure Airbus has several of them like backup computers, communication systems and power supply. In spite of all these based on wrong speed sensor a flight can go down? How vulnerable are we with these new technologies ( Our e60 has all of these ..)

Drive by wire
Steer by wire
Brake by Wire
Transmission by wire

The R reg 318 would have an accelerator cable not drive by wire, I recon he had a sticking cable like the one I had in my Z3. I oiled it with bicycle oil and it was fine after that.

One thing though, couldnt he have forced it in to Neutral. I would hate this to happen in my 525D, that would be frightening.

Now on to the Airbus. Why are these planes still flying with sensors that freeze up and send erronus data. Before the recent crash there was a incident where a A330's electrical systems completely shutdown and it dumped its fuel, luckily the pilot was able to make an emergency landing. You cant help but wonder if that is what happened to the Brazil flight RIP.

I dont know if the throttle has a linkage/cable still(i wouldnt think so) but the rest of the systems are still mechanical with electrical assistance.

I agree, these system are failing so they need to be replaced! there is no way you'd find me on an Airbus!!

A 1997 318 R reg would be a cable throttle for sure, the reason i think this is that my 2000 V reg Z3 2.0 litre had a cable throttle linkage as did my wifes 1996 316 Compact. My 2001 330 Sport had a electronic throttle "drive by wire".

Princess Diana died when her Mercedes crashed. Does that make Mercedes Benz an unsafe car? NO.

The A330 has been flying for close to 15 years with ZERO fatalities except for a training flight incident and the latest AF incident. The Boeing 747 has had several hull loses (and yes, with fatalities) but that does not make it an unsafe aircraft. The A330/A340 series make the backbone of airlines all over the world and have excellent reliability and safety records. Don't believe all that media BS. They don't have a clue of they are talking about.

A good friend of mine who is a pilot has flown the best of Boeing and Airbus, and will NEVER fly an Airbus again as they are unnecessarily complex and prone to "stupid" failures! For those of us who live in SoCal, remember the Airbus that had the front wheel turned 90 degrees and was the main attraction on LA Television while they circled and then (uneventfully ) landed?? It's that kind of crap that makes them somewhat less than desirable to seasoned airline pilots!

Yup, as if no Boeing or Mcdonnell Douglas planes have ever had any problems.

Do you remember when DC-10's were grounded because they kept on crashing. Have you heard of the MD-11's flipping over on landing and burning their occupants alive. The British airways Boeing 777 (which is Fly-By-Wire by the way and "COMPLEX") crashed short of the runway last year. They still don't know why. Several airlines have reported in-flight issues with the Boeing 777 engines. Does this make the 777 an unsafe plane? No.

BTW, I'm not trying to bash Boeing because they make super planes. But Airbus is just as good.
