I've gone through four Alpine White BMW's over the years. It's a great color and yes, it's the easiest color to take care of. Most people assume white shows the dirt faster, etc. but actually it's quite the opposite. The darker colors show the dirt instantly and the lighter colors, especially white, look clean even when they are dirty...

I drive a 545 in Alpine white.
the car looks like a bride in white dress the comments that i am receiving from friends is that the car really catches the attention when driving on the road. Again it is like food flavor i might like it while others dont. i guess this has to do with the location or the country you are living in. i like it the car it suits the e60 alot however, it is as if you are wearing a white shirt. attetion is a must

White is the sickest colour there. it's the colour that represents bmw best...imo...because it's the colour used in motorsport. I was upset when my stupid dealer told me that the M pack comes in special colours like carbon black....i would have liked to have white. Anyway black and white are the best colours although white is esier to maintain than black and don't forget it's a non metallic pain that means low costs when smth happens like a scratch, dent or smth. White will for sure sell harder than any colour and black gives a beastly look to the car especially at night.

Although I have silver-gray, white with auburn interior and sport pack's larger rims is a great choice. 
If you are worried about resale in a less-than-sunny locale, leasing is the answer.
