I have an adaptive headlight fault, and have narrowed the problem to most likely the position encoder or possibly the stepper motor in the headlight.

I know there is no reversible way to gain access to the e60 headlight, they don't bake open like other cars and need to be cut apart. I understand most of the people having done this were doing it to install angel eyes.

Since this is quite a drastic process, I am considering whether I have any other options to gain access to the guts of the adaptive headlight mechanism. It appears to me that the left/right pivoting portion of the assembly could be removed if I could gain access to the fasteners. What I am thinking of doing is drilling small access holes to remove the fasteners then I can seal those holes up when I am finished.

Does this sound feasible to anybody who has had their headlights apart to see the internals? Since the parts aren't individually available there is no useful information on realoem.

Its a terrible hacking job... When I look at it it appears that one cannot even simply cut the glue joint, you are cutting the polycarbonate lens. It seems then all the alignment between the lens and housing will be completely lost.

Such a pain in the ass these don't bake apart.

Far from being a hack job. Yea, you're cutting the lens as baking won't work. For alignment, it fits like a glove when putting it together. Just make sure when you cut it, you're not all over the place or cutting chunks. One cut line all around and it'll all come together nicely. I've done it on mine like 6-7 months ago and still no issues.

We have done nearly 100 cut lines since introduction, the lenses seal right back up.
