This issue really bugs me.
When behind an older car for eg. the exhaust gases enter the cabin even with AC on recirculation mode. Especially when heating.
Any of you experienced this? Any known fixes?

I had this once on another car. The flaps were not closing correctly.
Also, if you have the A/C on recirculate very long, it will let air in sometimes to get oxygen into the interior.

No. Other brand. It doesn't happen very often. And maybe this is not the problem on your car. But it could be the reason. Have you had it in recirculation very long when that happened?

- auto air recirculation - it was supposed to switch to recirculate by itself - i paid money for that!

- manual switch to recirculation when approaching another car
- default on recirculation.
None of them worked.
The dealer has no ideea how to fix this and i am curious to know if anybody has this problem on his car.

On my other car (not a BMW) I've had, the flaps were closed by vacuum pumps. One of them wasn't working anymore, the one flap stayed open and that created the problem. I don't know if the system is the same on the E60, but probably.
If this is happening all the time I would let the dealer check this out. They can put a hose on the exhaust of another E60 and direct it to the air intake of your E60. This way they can find out if it works pretty easy - and then it's their problem to find out what's wrong with it.

It could also be due to low outside temperatures. It's certainly true on other car a/c systems that below about 4 celsius, the car a/c will not/can not go into recirculate mode. Just as above a certain temp (26C) it will permanently be on reciec.
This is how my Merc used to work, so I'm borrowing the example and temperatures from there.

My AC is always in the auto circulation mode. Now that you mention the problem I also come to remember several similar cases. I did not pay much attention then , anyway, where I live, polution is not to bother much about compared to elsewhere.
