just got done reading EVERY previous post on this topic. everyone seems to have the "low oil, add 1 quart" issue 2k-6k after an oil change. well i had an oil change done last week, got the warning, added 0-40w, and now it's back after only 300miles. 06 530i with a solid 101200miles on the clock. no oil leaks, just had it inspected and nothing was found. im worried that it might be a head gasket because, previously posted, someone had an 06 530i with 60k, same issues. time to change the sensor?

Wouldn't the gasket also show signs of leakage if it was the reason?

I'd look into the ignition coils and spark plugs. Do you know if either of these have been swapped/maintained properly on the car?

I don't know exactly how the dealer is supposed to diagnose the faulty oil level sensor, but I'd recommend digging up BMW instructions on that procedure and following them through to determine if it is the sensor.

spark plugs are actually getting changed monday, along with the transmission service (found a leak in the trans pan). i'm thinking about unplugging and then re-inserting the oil sensor.

If you cannot find any leaks, I guess there's nowhere else to look other than the sensor. I seriously doubt you could have burned through a quart in 300 miles...

The exact thing happened to me only last week:

Change your crankcase breather ?60, There is a diy for it in this forum, its alongside your air breather filter

aw3964 Nov 23, 2010 10:00 PM

i'm starting with the basics: oil change with proper filter. driven for 200miles, no issues thus far.

The breather is a servicable item at 90,000 miles and should be changed anyway. Mine has 97,000 miles and is still as tight as a drum.
