Apology for my ignorance but doesn't AS get disabled when you disable DTC? If I was tracking, I would disable all aids to get a true feel of the car.
here's what i thought of AS when i did my first autocross -
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=26876&hl=
also, the very first time i drove on a windy mountain road in this car, i was trying to slide the tail out and have some fun. AS did its auto counter-steer and almost steered me off the cliff! that was a very scarry moment for me.
basically, i think AS is horrid for the track or any aggressive driving. i like to feel 100% in control of the car when i'm pushing it, and AS doesn't provide that. that's why the m5 doesn't have it. if you won't be doing this kind of driving, then you'll be fine with AS. you might even like it, especially for its practicality and safety features.
for me, AS came with the my2005 sport pack so i had no choice. if i had the choice, i wouldn't pay extra for AS. the pros don't outweigh the cons for me so its not worth it. its just different, not better.

pros:
1. less effort to park
2. auto countersteer is safe if you unintentionally oversteer
cons:
1. less steering feel/feedback
2. auto countersteer is dangerous if you intentionally oversteer
3. change in steering ratio under acceleration as you unwind steering after apex on the a track is dangerous

My Ride: carbon black/black dakota, M package with M aero kit, M suspension and 18" 135 M style wheels -
steptronic, adaptive bi-xenon, active steering, moonroof, comfort seats, comfort access, nav pro, logic7, CD, HUD, PDC and some ...
I have AS and I like it and would order it again. I have driven non-AS E60s as well, in comparison the AS definitevely gives more comfort and safety in everyday traffic, still giving enough feel and touch for "spirited driving" (as some people here like to call it). As jet190 pointed out, only on a racetrack it?s a disadvantage, but I can see no reason to take a 1700 kg four-door sedan there anyway.

I love AS. I am much more likely to need the auto correcting of oversteer than not. This feature of AS should be able to be disabled (actually all of it should be) but I am sure that there is a reason.
Anyway - I can't see drifting my car that much. I am sure that you could but it does seem strange to do that to such an expensive large car. I consider myself a "spirited driver" and I shut off DSC from time to time and I never have found AS intrusive. But a little sliding here and there is not like track driving. Personally - if I take up that hobby (going to a track), I am doing it in a smaller car with an engine that I can afford to blow up....
AS and Logic7 are the things I miss driving out of the dealers lot when I have a loaner....

Love the discussion, thank's guys!
There seems to be drivers and enjoyment drivers.
Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I'm kind of want to lie back
on the BMW steering without any "kinky nut crankcases".
I still like the feel of beeing the driver, all the time.

I tracked mine once and loved it, but would not do that to my E60 again. The guys having the most fun were those with an E46 or better yet, a Mini. Most of them were not their daily drivers.
