I have a 2007 model with AS and the DTC switch does not disable AS - I am 99.9999% sure.
I just checked my manual and I can't find anything about the AS being turned off and frankly, I can't see BMW let us turn it off.

Nope. It doesn't disable AS. You're misreading the manual. Only one specific feature, the active steering intervention - when the car itself will induce some limited self-steering to help you when you run of talent - is disabled. In all other respects AS is exactly the same, DSC on or off. Which is why you couldn't tell the difference, as AS itself isn't disabled.

As mentioned, I think some tweaks have been made to it over the years. I love it - but also as mentioned, I think you can get used to anything.
