Default Active steer fault

Hi guys,
last few days Ive had the active steer fault light up, Ive read through a heap of old posts, and tried a few things but still comes on!
I topped up fluid, tried the reset but nothing happens!!
The one thing which I didnt read in previous posts was when the fault would pop up,
I think you could set the watch to the fault popping up! Its never there on start up, even if I restart straight away, the fault is gone, it always comes on after about 10minutes after starting. still feels and drives the same, not sure if wheel alignment is 100% at anytime, but doesnt seem to be too far off, steering wheels doesnt seem to go off centre after fault either!
Has anyone had this type of active steer fault?
Any help would be appreciated as BMW dealer is a distance away from me!!
Thanks
Bob

Maybe indicating a failing battery. With the car running check the voltage at the "battery jump / charge" point under the hood. Vt should be a constant 14v. With the engine off the voltage at the same point should be 12 ro 12.5 vt +
First indicates possible ALT failure. Second maybe a failing battery.
That's a place to start.

Someone has a topic about this. BMWs are notorious power hogs. If there is not enough power faults and codes will happen. If too much power fuse start blowing. Let me search and find the article

I"ll have to dig up my meter and check the levels.
Thanks tu2tle thanks for the link, checked it out and is somewhat similar, main difference is that i have only been getting the Active steer fault, no others
Thanks Cricketts, Im hoping it is something as simple as the ALT as I could change that myself, as for getting through the steering to the sensor what some guys are trying is a bit too fiddly for me! Dont have the patience for that little stuff!!

Hi, I have a 2005 545i w/6spd and started to get that same warning. As time went on my dashboard lit up like a bloody Christmas tree which caused our infamous Dong to go nuts scaring the hell out of me. Took it to the shop and an alternator and battery later all faults went away and my baby was back to normal. Definitely check those two out because one, if not both are usually the culprits. Good luck my friend.

Thanks Darkant, hopefully it does just end up being the alt/batt issue!!

I believe the dealer would simply want to replace the Active Steering Control Module. It's about a $2000 job for parts and labor, if I remember correctly.

I think i might try the battery disconnect for a while, then the steer reset procedure. I think thats what I read in a post somewhere that worked for others! Then again I could be thinking of something different as Ive done a lot of reading on this site last few days!!!
