Hold down the km reset button and turn the key to first position (radio on) immediately release the button.
You will see a small display where the time/temp etc. usually appears.
Sequential presses of the button steps through this menu ie. 1,2,3,4,5 etc. up to about 21.
Add up the digits of the numbers printed on your window.
Go to position 19 on the menu and wait a second or two. Under lock you will see a position to enter the calculated number which you do by sequential presses of the button.
Once you get to your calculated number stop pressing the button and wait.
Menu goes back to position 1.
Now toggle through to say position 7. Once you get there wait a couple of seconds and you will then see 7.1, next press shows 7.2 etc. etc.
You will see that it displays, rpm, fuel consumption, battery voltage, current speed, core temp. etc. etc. etc.
Each menu has something different some meaningful some not so meaningful.
Those of you that understand German may be able to translate.
Good luck

HAHAHA thats really close or EXACTLLY the same as in the MINI Coopers and other BMWs... typical...
Instrument Cluster Test Functions
Some of these are just guesses based on the BMW E46 Cluster
Tests 1, 2, 10 & 19 are always unlocked.
Tests 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15 & 21 are only
accessible after unlocking the test functions.
See test 19 to unlock the functions

In submenu I think 1.6, I have software version stated as 49.50.02. I remember someone mentioned his SA referred to the version using 49 and 50, rather than 13.2 or 14 or whatever.
Test 2 is indeed funky to watch. You can see speedometer maxed out, and the white bars on the tachometer rolled back to 4000+ rpm, and some of the icons changing colours...

Skaffa,
It may be possible but there is the reset which sets everything back again.
Only negative affect is that it zeros your trip meter and asks you to re-enter your time and date.

Gave it one more try just now. Managed to unlock the menu.
The pass code is the sum of the last **5** digits of your VIN which is shown in menu 1.0. Mine is B3XYZAB. I just added up XYZAB, and keyed in this sum in menu 19.
A few of the submenus are quite clear what they are but couldn't understand majority.
Mine is a Right-Hand-Drive 7/2004 E60.
