Could it just possibly be the weather perhaps the summer time on the second set of tires being the roads being warmer hence more traction on tires. I'm probably overlooking on my opnipn have you done a car alignment?
It is over a year time frame so mix of summer and winter. I have not done an alignment for a while. I just thought the wear would be less even, but that seems to be the most likely indicator.

Just because they are the same make and type does not mean they are the same.

Tyre manufacturers often retain a brand name but revise the compounds, its possible the compounds are slightly different.

Not absolutely the sollution to your problem, but a viable alternative.

Mark, not sure I agree, the ContiSportContact 2's have consistently has a tread wear rating of 260, their replacement the ContiSportContact 3 has a slightly improved treadwear rating of 280, which is an improvment but not enough to explain the differences that the OP saw.

I think his wife borrowed the car and spent the evning doing burnouts and doughnuts to impress her friends

Granted, there are drawbacks, too, but that's one of the benefits of not having a wife.

BTW - you know what W.I.F.E. stands for, right?
