99 740il replacement
Looking to replace 99 740il with an 05 5 series. Presently also own 05 325i with heated seats and park distance control. Wife wants both. Any comments besides replacing wife? BMW CCA member since 1972 originally from New England. BTW just replaced Yokohamas with Conti's DW on 3 series. Much better and much quieter.

So I bought an '07 530xi ... with just about every option BMW offered.
Here I am 4 years and 47K miles later.
The 5 series is comfortable and handles very well. It's got lots of goodies and I think I've learned how to use and enjoy most of them
What do I miss? Like the commercial, "I COULDAHAD A V-8". The car is quick but the normal (non-turbo) 6's don't have the torque of a V-8. If I did it again, and I might one day soon, I would probably wrestle with the same decision. And if BMW brought a diesel 5'er to the US ... I'd DEFINITELY be interested. That combines the sweetness of the 6 cyl motors BMW is known for with the monstrous torque that really works!
I had a 330d previously (E46 model 204HP). Straight 6 diesel. The torque was a MONSTER. The throttle responsiveness is heart touching. Ideal for city driving where you can enjoy a strong engine while obeying rules and staying legal. Now I drive a 5er V8 306HP with 100 more horsepower but still I miss my old diesel. Less torque, throttle lag with AT on this V8. Obviously there are advantages (sound, warms up quickly, endless power in high revs), but also half the mileage.
Petrol E60 = comfort, better for long distances, feels slow with automatic transmission in the city due to the low torque (unless it's an M5)
Diesel E90 = stiff ride on rough roads with 17-18 inch wheels, somewhat small but easier to drive, pleasure on better roads, twice the mileage.
Consider buying a diesel if you're not a religious diesel hater
