I went over to the parts/service department earlier at Long Beach BMW to replace my battery. I was quoted $924 to replace and register the battery? What the hell? Is that the standard rate or are they trying to pull fast one on me?

Evidently, your dealer thinks:

1) You own a 5 series BMW, therefore you must be rich and will unflinchingly pay exhorbitant amounts for what an independent shop would do for far less,

or

2) You are naive and believe that BMWs are so sophisticated and technologically advanced that even simple maintenance is beyond the ability and comprehension of everybody but trained BMW master mechanics.

Take it to an indy. They can replace the battery and register it for around $200.

$100 for a new battery (non OEM). Will work fine and outlive most of the other stuff on your car.

EDIT: Free install.

That's a very high price for a BMW dealer battery R&R. What year is your car (how old is the battery)? There are options available to replace the battery if you choose. Most are significantly lower in price. As noted in one of the posts to yours search the forum - it's talked about a LOT !!

I have the same car, new battery and installed for about $220. My car is a CPO and I still refuse to go to the dealership for that reason.

I would report then to the Better Business Bureau. That is plain and simply stealing. It's a $150.00 battery takes 10 minutes to change and less than that to register.
