My car is still on it's way and still researching answers in this forum.
What are peoples experience with an extended warranty?
What is the extra cost for 6 years?
I'm buying, not leasing.

I have no experience and I think modern cars are going to be different than cars from even a few years ago. I am starting to feel a bit worried about having my warranty expire in 3 more years as seems to take quite a long time to re-program the car and I am not confident this is something that anyone other than BMW will ever be able to do. This could be expensive.

My Ride: (USA) 645Ci, Silver Gray, Chateau, Cold Weather PKG, Premium Sound PKG, Sport PKG, Step, NAV [Std Equip in 645], HUD, Satellite (SIRIUS) Radio, Aux Input, Bluetooth enabled using iPhone 3GS w/ adapter cradle - Build date - 01/05, Baby delivered 2/24/05
I had a quote of $3140 with $0 deductable for 6/100,000 from my Credit Union for a 6er. Available up to 12,000 miles so I'll evaluate my situation over that time. Mainly would depend if I replace car or not in 4 years or less. Up to now I had been keeping cars 8-10 years, but I am in different economic mode now and even if I love the 6er I think I would change out sooner (M6 or 6xx). So probably no longer an issue with me.

Are you gonna keep your car for 6 years? Keep in mind that 550i is coming out in less than a year..

I'm not a big extended "warranty" guy; however, you can rack up 3 grand in repairs in short order if you own a German car. I have a February, 2004 build 545 and I'd NEVER own it outside of some sort of warranty period. That's why it'll be long gone at 49,000 miles. So, if you want to keep it until 100,000 miles, spend the 3 grand.

Thanks for the feedback. I will refer back to this prior to signing the papers.

I've been thinking about it also. These care are going to be SO expensive to fix down the road. All those gadgets + labor -- OUCH. I'm going to have to get one. I can't trade in for a few years with a baby on the way.

i don't understand why you guys have all been quoted in excess of $3,000. i purchased my vehicle in nov. 2004 and the first offer from the finance officer was $1,700.... i was able to talk her down to $1,500 so naturally i took it....
For all the scheduled mantinence and repairs...in my opinion its well worht it.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not interested in driving this, or mostly any car, when it's out of warranty. Typically two major repairs will more than pay for the warranty. My father's 750iL had a radio "issue" that cost over $1500 to fix. Other things that you wouldn't expect to crap out will (and they aren't inexpensive).
Just my $0.02.
