My SA just quoted me $399 to do a transmission flush on my 550. I know the BMW ATF is pretty expensive, but is that a pretty fair price for the service?

That sounds pretty reasonable. I am looking at doing the same thing soon, possibly DIY, but I think the fluid alone is nearly $200 and it is hard to get the fluid level right without a lift. The car needs to be level (off the ground) and the fluid at operating temp. I searched here a while ago and I think some posters were paying as much as $800 for a flush, but that may have included pan/filter replacement. I am not sure that is really necessary though.

Oh, and that $399 price above includes the 10% AL sales tax.

That $800 probably did include the pan/ filter replacement. I emailed Bav Auto and they said do a flush only now, and a flush + pan/ filter replacement next time. He said a pan/ filter wasn't necessary under 100k miles

ATF1 runs for about $18 a liter. A straight drain will get 6 liters out. The whole transmission takes about 9-10 liters.
My guess is they are charging you about 2 hours of labor. Not bad I guess.
Just speaking from experience but my filter and fluid was pretty dirty at 60k. I recommend changing out the filter.
