This may sound odd, but how does the acceleration of a 550 compare to a C5 or C6 vette? Why do I care, I really love the feel of a vette, but cannot have one now...no back seat and I cannot afford a BMW and a vette. So I am considering trading my 525 for a 550i, maybe for the best of both worlds...good hard acceleration, handling, quality and a back seat!

Is the price of the Sport Package worth it?
I do not know about the C5 or C6 but I can assure you that it is very comparable to the Porsche Carerra S (almost the same from 0 to 160 km/h). I have personally tried it with many carreras

OK, I am SOLD! Now, what can I reasonably expect to pay for an 08' 550 with a Sport Pkg? It appears that the few I have seen in Nashville are running about 69K MSRP. I have done all the research, edmunds TMV, KBB, etc, the variance is great. Also, I am considering for the first time leasing, any words of advice or caution? If anyone wants to chat privately and share their experiences please PM me. I truly appreciate all of your input and knowledge.

Not a chance. It's not even close. Find me a 550 doing low to mid 4 seconds on 0-60 and we can talk. Very different cars, they have a similar power output (though the 997 does it with 3.8 litres) but there is around 800lbs in weight difference. 550 is a phenomenal car, and it does different things better than the 997, but it can't keep up with one...

I have owned both.

Ditto, the 550i will almost run with my 964, but the 993 drills it to the wall, with just a slight horsepower edge of about 50, and, of course, four turbochargers.

And to answer my own question about hot chicks in Vette's, have to be Nancy Wilson in a 1977ish Silver 'vette, in the flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High...

Evidently, the average 55-year-old balding man has more disposable income than a 20-year-old aspiring actress who waits tables for a living.

Shocking.
+1

My old man has an 06 Vette. I agree Vette and 550 are totally different cars. The Vette is a fun car to drive but not for everyday use. Like STUDAVIS stated the "550 offers about a thousand things that the C6 does not offer, namely, quality build construction, quiet ride, a back seat, a trunk, a nifty diagram to tell you how to put golf clubs in the trunk, nice seats, greater resale value, reliability, and many others. " I may be a bit biased towards the 550 sport. As far as pricing from what I've read you should be able to get the dealer to about $1000 over invoice. Good Luck!

what is the level of confidence you have about this ? Believe me you will be shocked the same way I did when we made the 550 and the 997 S do several runs (from 0 to 210Km/h and from 60 to 180km/h (of course the drivers are not professional formula 1 guys). We have done this for the sake of knowing the difference and we were expecting that the 997 S will eat the 550 alive!!!

Here are the results (note that the road was straight):

0 to 210Km/h (rolling wheels at start to eliminate skid effect): the 997 S started gaining distance at 160km/h and there was around 10 meters difference at the speed of 210.
60 to 180km/h: the two cars reached at almost the same time

Do not take my words for granted guys... go try it yourself

by just looking at the technical specs of both cars what you said makes perfrect sense and when you drive both you get even more convinced as you feel the speed in the 997......personally I used to have your same views until I tried!!!

By the way the after the trials the guy owning 997 S decided to exchange his car for a turbo !!

The absolute best deal in the automotive world is a BMW 550 Sport purchased using Euro Delivery and being a member of BMW CCA for 12 months prior to purchase. I saved 11% off of US MSRP. This is a great deal on a great car with all of your maintenance covered by the manufacturer.

From what I can tell the ED is a wash, the savings is soaked up by the travel costs only to be followed by a long wait for your car. I know nothing of the savings offered by the BMW CCA, can you elaborate and must you be a member for 12 mo to get the discount?

100%.

I've owned both cars, and whilst they are completely different in their intended use and target market there's simply no question which is the faster and more agile car of the two. Not that I race myself but any car can beat any car, if that's your kind of thing, if the other driver isn't trying. I say again - with nearly identical power output, 800lbs difference in weight cannot be overcome by anything other than someone not trying very hard. The 997 is quite simply a smaller, faster, and much more agile sports car whereas the 550 is the best sedan on the market. They don't really compete in any other way.
