550i New N62 Engine
I am seeking guidance on replacing the 4.8L N62 engine in my 2008 BMW 550i/Automatic Transmission. Unfortunately, the engine suffered catastrophic damage after an accident, resulting in a damaged oil pan and subsequent loss of oil pressure. Despite my efforts to mitigate the damage, the engine ultimately shut off.
After replacing the oil pan and refilling the engine with 8.5 quarts of oil, the engine still attempts to crank and crank but fails to fire. I suspect potential compression problems maybe? Given the extent of the damage, I am exploring options for a replacement engine.
I am considering purchasing a reputable, used N62 engine from eBay and would appreciate advice on the key factors to consider when swapping the engine. Specifically, I would like to know:
- What are the critical components to inspect and verify when purchasing a used engine?
- Are there any specific programming or software requirements for swapping the engine with the same type?
- What are the potential pitfalls or challenges to anticipate during the engine swap process?
I plan to enlist the assistance of my local, independent mechanic who works on Bmws for the installation and any necessary programming or adjustments. Thank you for your expertise and guidance in this matter.

If you replace the engine the the same type, nothing is required in the software to install it. I installed a 2006 e60 3.0 engine in a 2004 e60 525I and it did not require any software updates, it's still runs amazing 3 years later.
I purchased the engine on EBAY from a California salvage yard, it was perfect and even had all the cables and connectors on it.
I would replace the valve stem seals and valve cover gaskets will it out of the car, as well spark plugs...
I bought it from these guys.
