My mileage sucks. I'm getting 13.9 mpg with my steptronic transmission.
Is that hand calculation or OBC calc?

Yup, mileage around town is lower than I expected too ... about 13 or so. Heck, I used to get 14.5 in my E38 740. But out on the highway the 550 is amazingly frugal - I've hit 27 mpg cruising along the highway at 65 mph.
Net, net .. I've gotten 19 mpg since day one with about 50% highway miles.

Come on you guys if you can afford to buy the King of the V8's you ain't gonna worry about fuel consumption.
If you did you'd have bought 525's.

If you're relying on your OBC, remember that it may be miscalibrated. OTOH, the 550i does have a lower EPA rating (than the 545i), and probably isn't as broken in as your 540i was.
I was just about to post this same question. My mileage sucks. I'm getting 13.9 mpg with my steptronic transmission. I am not driving it particularly hard. Granted this is mostly in bad L.A. traffic, but my e39 540, which I drove hard got about 16 to the gallon. What gives?

The mileage on my 545 auto was under 13mpg during break-in when I kept it under 4,500rpm.
Now with 3,000 miles, I get about 16 mpg city, driving it moderately hard. So it does get better with age!

Im averaging 17.4 now since I'm able to push the car a bit more (1200miles)
,,on the highway I agree, it gets like 33 to 25 depending on our speed. I drive 70% city and 3-% hwy and still can get 300 miles for the full tank...
I just filled up with 17.9 gallons and a woping $53..not bad since the dealer paid for it as they tdelivered the car with 3/4 of a tank due to the hurricane
