thanks everyone.
Status: I bought a quart of Mobil 1 0w40. Added it all and the oil level is now about 1 green block from full. So, 1 quart didnt fill it up. The level indicator was yellow.
The BMW service mgr got back to me, said adding oil is normal. And, I think I heard this before but still laughed, BMW says adding 1 qt of oil every 750 miles is still OK and considered normal.

You meant 7,500 miles, right? I usually add 1 quart every 6 month/7,000 miles.

From the answers it seems that it's normal for the 8 cyl. E60. I wouldn't
worry about it. You still have 2 years of CPO warranty that would
take care of major engine problems anyway.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. If you check the manual I believe it says you can drive 125 miles after the light comes on.

FYI I haven't added a drop of oil but I do mid-cycle (7500 mile) changes. At those change points the oil has been full.

I haven't had to add oil between changes yet. The oil level gauge always shows full. It's got 54k on it now.....and I change every 5k now.....but when the dealer was changing it...still, never low between their intervals.
I use Mothers wheel polish on my tips....takes the stains right off

I don't race my car. I don't see how much rubber I can leave behind, or who all I can take off the line or in the quarter mile. I drive "enthusiastically" when conditions and the road allow. I've tracked twice (once the car control clinic, once the D novice class at PR). In general I take care of my car as if I were going to own it for a long time (I will), and that includes <not> maxing the revs at every opportunity.
