if you drive both, can you tell a difference?
550i is as fast as 545i just a little bit smoother.

The differance is crank, rods, and pistons....not sure if they have differant cams. You could go down to your local bmw dealer and buy these parts and increase the displacement in the engine, not sure how much it would cost though, and have the same hp/engine.
You can?t do that at the parts counter alone.

Hahahahaha...a 545i beating an SRT8 hahahahaha come on now you silly goose...NO WAY.....shit, i can't stop laughing....oh damn. Not even close my frind.....I have both...no contest!
300C - 4.9 sec
545/550 - 5.2 sec
550/6 - 4.8 sec
Some people on this board were getting 4.8 sec for their 545s. My G-timer showed 5.11 sec for 545 and 4.96 sec for 550. Over the last 3 years I had several encounters with various SRT8 cars and they all were very favorable to my BMWs. I have to admit though that it always was a single person in 545/550 vs. 2-3 people in SRT8 (sedans not Jeeps). Also in a street race luck and traction are more important than sheer power. If you connect well you can easily beat a more powerful car who's driver over/under-cooked it from the start.

I was thinking the exact same thing. There is no way that a 545 is beating the SRT8... unless the guy in the SRT8 has short legs and can't fully depress the gas pedal!

What do you mean by "not even close". Magazine numbers for these cars 0 to 60 mph are
300C - 4.9 sec
545/550 - 5.2 sec
550/6 - 4.8 sec

These two are very different animals.
4.4 V8 in 545 was kind of over-achiever. I felt stronger that 325hp would suggest and was very willing. You could go against 425hp SRT8 and beat it.
4.8 in 550 is an opposite. It is a very smooth but lazy engine. It can but is not willing to use its power. It is stronger than 4.4 above 100 mph but you have to really push it to get there. The kind of engine you would expect to be in a Lexus or MB not a BMW.
I have to admit though that my 545 engine died at around 15K miles whereas my 550 is still in a great shape with more tan 30K miles on the clock. BMW seems to de-tune 4.8 a little to improve longevity.

Did they increase the displacement with longer throws in the crank or larger pistons or both? Doing one or the other would result in a different character motor. The 4.8 was in their truck first, the X5 4.8.
EDIT: Yes ...
545 engine is N62B44 Bore 92mm x Stroke 82.7mm - 4398cc
550 engine is N62B48 Bore 93mm x Stroke 88.7mm - 4798cc
