Don't remember why but Alpina uses the 4.4L engine for their 500HP B5.
Alpina uses the the 4.4 liter engine because the cylinder walls are thicker which makes the engine block better able to handle the pressure of the supercharger.

These two are very different animals.
4.4 V8 in 545 was kind of over-achiever. I felt stronger that 325hp would suggest and was very willing. You could go against 425hp SRT8 and beat it.
4.8 in 550 is an opposite. It is a very smooth but lazy engine. It can but is not willing to use its power. It is stronger than 4.4 above 100 mph but you have to really push it to get there. The kind of engine you would expect to be in a Lexus or MB not a BMW.

I have to admit though that my 545 engine died at around 15K miles whereas my 550 is still in a great shape with more tan 30K miles on the clock. BMW seems to de-tune 4.8 a little to improve longevity.
My 2004 545i has over 83k miles and its running perfectly. I love it.

I'm not sure about the high end speeds acceleration, but everytime I check the 1/4 mile rating on the 550i, it never got lower than 13.8ET. The 545i is rated at 13.7ET all day. I'm also not sure about the 100+Lbs of extra weight the 550i has.

But then again I just checked online, the 550i did a 13.3 ET at dragtimes.com. What do you now, the 550i is faster overall.

I doubt it.... 545i beating a SRT8? but it would be interesting... Is there any proof?

I was thinking the exact same thing. There is no way that a 545 is beating the SRT8... unless the guy in the SRT8 has short legs and can't fully depress the gas pedal!

Well...

if you ask the 550i guys, they'll say: "of course, there is - big difference in fact!"

if you ask the 545i guys, they'll say: "of course not - none at all!"

+1 I would say the same..lol

When I was at the dealership the other day I was picking my car up and gentlemen commented on my car and I talked to him for a few minutes. He has a 550i and use to have a 545i. He basically said what you said. He felt the 545 engine was more free spirited then the 550i.

Dragtime.com's number are specious at best. I wouldn't put much stock in them.
