Very good Grasshopper. I haven't seen the C&D results for the 750i. Are they brand new or did I doze too long? I am going to apply my questimation skills soon.
Here's something interesting we haven't though of before. Zero to 60's for the X5 4.8 and X5 4.4 are 5.9 and 6.8--a difference of .9 in favor of the 4.8. And, the 4.8 has the higher rear end and weighs a little more. Hummm! Well, OK, then, the 550i should go to 60 in 5.2 - .9 = 4.3. So, that won't happen because that's essentially as fast as the M5 in the current test. So, I wonder what gives with the X5 figures.
isn't the 4.4 that was in the X5 the old 4.4 though?? i maybe wrong.. but i'm sure it's the case
That's a good point. I am not sure. I looked, and it is the old one. I should have know since we have a 4.4 X5. So, the HP difference is 50. Still, given the .9 sec difference, I am very glad the 545i has the new 4.4. In other words, .9 still seems like a large difference even given the old 4.4.
I think the easiest way to find out 550 VS. 545 0 to 60 is to compare 750 vs. 745. Anyways, I find hard to believe that a 750 will out preform a 545 given the fact that 545 HP to weight ratio is greater than the 750s. Not to mention that added weight makes the 750 harder to launch.
Welcome S...545i. And, IMO, you are right. The 750i will not beat the 545i. The 545i time given above for the quarter mile is the slowest of those reported by the big-three US car mags. The other three reported are faster than the above 1/4 time for the 750i.

I don't know about the 750i not beating the 545i. It has the bigger engine, and on the street, I think it may even overtake the 545i since the Mags test are just point seconds apart. I'm still waiting for a 550i test result from anyone.

Dear All,
i have been reading all these posts about the differance between the 545 vs 750 and 550.
when it comes to me, and from my experience the 545 is intended to be a family car and not a race car for track. i have been driving the 545 for almost a year and it still surprise me by the amount of power it delivers when it is needed on the motorway.
.4 or 0.5 seconds wont gives that huge differance when driving on normal roads,
At the end, the 545 performance is great i am a driver who likes performance cars and i am very satisfied by the power of my car.
regards

My Ride: 2006 550I Manual White/Black 6Speed Sport
I recently posted a note reviewing my observations between my 04 545I and my new 06 550I. Please make note that my vehicle is a manual shift. Here are my initial thoughts aside from 2 years of advanced mechanics. Please make note of # 6 and # 7...
1) Shifter is different and seems to be shorter and more ergonomical.
2) Shifter gate is much tighter and feels more manual than the 545 which was very flimsy
3) Clutch seems to be similar although gear engagement is much smoother
4) Hill assist acutually works (when release break, the car holds its place avoiding it to roll backwards)
5) Idle Surge (when sitting at light, when you re-engage clutch, the RPMs surge roughly 500rpm to just under 1000K
6) Engine displacement is different so power curve is more even and longer
7 FASTER!!!

Hi Bimmer32
What you said is right,
I consider my self a fast driver ( well this is why i own a 545). i always would like to use the car to the max power, and the power of the 545 is great
if i dont find somebody to race with me every day from home to office and vise versa i race against my best time.
but still, i dont beleive that the 550 will have such significant differance, now if you comapre it to M5 this is where the differrance is. i test drove it and i can simply say it is a beast.
FYI, with my 545 i am racing with Porches, last time i could easily beat a carrera 911.
Regards
